JOURNAL OF LANGUAGE
Journal of Language (JoL) is an open access and a peer reviewed scientific journal covering research reports in linguistics, literature or language teaching, and critical evaluations of books on the related areas published by Faculty of Literature, Islamic University of North Sumatra (UISU), Medan, Indonesia. The main objective of JoL is to provide a platform for scholars, academicians and researchers to share the contemporary thoughts mainly in the fields of language, literature, and language teaching. This journal is published twice a year in May and November.

<![CDATA[This study aims to determine the positive impacts of love in the movie script A Star Is Born. This study is concerned with the types of love which imply the positive impacts. This study uses Fromm’s theory of love. The types of love analyzed in this study are brotherly love, erotic love, and self-love. Next, the positive impacts of love found in this study are for health, for personal ties, and for relationship. This study uses descriptive qualitative method to explain the types of love that imply positive impact, and positive impact of love from the quotations in the script. This film tells the story of an ordinary woman with great talent who accidentally meets a male celebrity who is addicted to alcohol. The man is attracted to the woman who has a dream to conquer Hollywood. He pushes her become a star. The results of this study show that love can have a positive impact for health that triggers Jack to be released from drugs and alcohol. Besides, the self-love in this movie is presented when Jack helps Ally to be more confident and love herself; consequently, she can be a successful songwriter and singer. Jack always loves her as she is. Ally always supports his health. Both of them strengthen and heal each other.]]>

<![CDATA[The research is based on the reality depicted in the novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga by Tere Liye that the human values of the millennial generation are currently starting to fade. Human value is a basic trait that humans have to love each other and not be concerned with self-interest. This study aims to provide input to the community, especially millennial generations, that human values must be maintained to obtain a harmonious life. Humanitarian problems arise when a sense of concern and tolerance for others suffers a setback due to the non-functioning of the institution optimally. The method used is descriptive qualitative showing the phenomena of human values in society by collecting written data in the forms of words, phrases and sentences containing human values in the novel. The data collection is done by means of note-taking method, referring to the topics of discussion. The results show that human values in the forms of love, sacrifice and tolerance are depicted in the novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga by Tere Liye. The results of this study are expected to raise awareness among the millennial of the importance of human values for the continuity of peaceful and harmonious life to improve lifestyle quality on an ongoing basis.]]>

<![CDATA[This study constitutes an identification of the protagonist’s struggle in H. G. Wells’ novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. This study discusses the story of an English shipwreck survivor named Edward Prendick who is rescued from an accident and taken to an unnamed island to be mended by Montgomery. He is a man of science who works for Doctor Moreau in the island. The story deals with Prendick’s struggle to maintain his sanity due to Doctor Moreau terrifyingly peculiar works of vivisection practices. This study focuses on Doctor Moreau through Prendick’s point of view. Prendick, as the protagonist, experiences both internal and external struggle. He has to choose between saving his life or to obey Dr. Moreau to do his evil bidding. Otherwise, he has to keep his composure to blend with the island people. This study adopts descriptive qualitative method to characterise the mental struggle experienced by the protagonist. The study concludes that the protagonist experiences significant amount of both internal and external struggle throughout the story. The recommendation of this story is a moral lesson. The lesson is to face struggle head-on so you can defeat it. Hopefully, this study can be of relevance in future studies regarding the topic discussed in this study.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is aimed at analyzing Philia as friendship in Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Longest Ride, published in 2013. The analysis is focused on the categories of Philia as friendship covering utility, happiness, and moral done by the major characters of the novel, namely Ira Levinson, Ruth, Luke Collins, Sophian Danko. The method used to analyze this study is a descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the researchers apply the theory of philia as friendship proposed by Aristotle. Philia is one type feeling of love in the Christian and Greek traditions based on friendly relations. Other types of love that are also in Christian theology are eros, agape and storage. The results show that the categories of Philia as friendship: utility, happiness and moral are reflected and done by the major characters. Utility is seen from Ira and Ruth with strong and healthy love relationship. Happiness is seen through Ira and Ruth who always feels happy when they see each other. Moral can be seen through the trust of Ira and Ruth who always share each and everything together.]]>

<![CDATA[The research aims to determine the effectiveness of applying the Google Classroom Application on the students' Writing Skills from grade X1 of SMA Swasta Gajah Mada Medan. The research applied the quantitative method with experimental design. The data were analyzed using the mathematics system related to the methods applied in the research. According to the research findings, it is concluded that Applying Google Classroom Application potentially gives more effectiveness in teaching writing skills to the students. After the post-test is done, the mean score of applying Google Classroom Application is 85.65. The standard deviation is 7.353, and the number of students is 26. The mean by applying conventional strategy is 62.00, the standard deviation is 3.943, and the number of students is 24. From the research result, the researchers found that the mean score of the experimental group students was improved by 17.10. In the controlled group, the mean score of the students was improved by 9.75. After the post-test by applying Google Classroom Application to the students is undertaken, the normality test result is 0.465. After a post-test to the students by applying the conventional teaching method in the controlled group is given, the normality test result is 0.243. The research finding explained that the Google Classroom Application successfully improved the students' writing skills, especially at SMA Swasta Gajah Mada Medan during the Covid-19 pandemic.]]>

<![CDATA[The study focuses on the stress experienced by the protagonist, Alicia Berenson. The main purpose of this study is to determine the types and the impacts of stress experienced by the protagonist by the name of Alicia Berenson, based on the theory of stress proposed by Priyoto (2014). In analyzing The Silent Patient, the researchers use qualitative research method to process and arranges the data. The data collected are divided into two categories i.e. primary data and secondary data. The primary data is the novel The Silent Patient (2019), and the researchers find fifteen data to be included in the analysis. The secondary data are books and other sources related to the analysis such as books or journals of stress issues, literary theory, the author’s biography, internet and other relevant information to the analysis of this research paper. The data are collected through library research and searched based on the explanation from types and the impact of Stress proposed by Priyoto. The results of the study show the following conclusion. First, Alicia suffers from chronic stress which can be shown through impaired social relationships and nervousness. Second, the behavioral impact is shown through changes in the behavior system to be silent, aggressive behavior and self-injured.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper exmined the perception of speech using audio visual and replica for students of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa Univesity. This research was aimed at discussing face-to-face conversation or speech felt by the ears and eyes. The prerequisites for audio-visual perception of speech by using ambiguous perceptual sine wave replicas of natural speech as auditory stimuli are studied in details. When the subjects were unaware that auditory stimuli were speech, they only showed a negligible integration of auditory and visual stimuli. The same subjects learn to feel the same auditory stimuli as speech; they integrate auditory and visual stimuli in the same way as natural speech. These research result suggests a special mode of perception of multisensory speech.]]>

<![CDATA[This research was conducted to examine speech act in the video script of Lampu Islam Youtube Channel. The edition of the video is entitled An Atheist Converting to Islam. This study aims to answer the problem about the classification of speech act found in the video script. This research applied the theory of speech act proposed by Austin and further developed by Searle. There are three types of speech act. The classification involves locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary acts. The result of the research shows that all the type of Speech Act can be found in the video script. The utterances which belong to locutionary act reach four (4) occurrences. For illocutionary, there are two (2) utterances. Then, the utterances of perlocutionary acts occur most dominantly with sixteen (16) occurrences. Perlocutionary act reaches 62.5% occurrences in the video script. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the script is intended to give an effect to the listeners of the channel and to offer ideas to other people.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper deals with the Effort to Survive in Scott Neustadter’s and Michael H. Weber’s movie script The Fault In Our Stars, and it refers to two topics of discussion i.e. pleasing herself and doing medication ; the protagonist’s effort to stay alive is due to suffering from stage 4 thyroid cancer. In analyzing the two topics, the descriptive qualitative method is taken as most appropriate method to process the data. The analysis indicates that the protagonist encouragingly makes some efforts for her healthy treatments as to please herself involving meeting her lover, going for a picnic, and meeting her favorite author; as to do medication by doing some therapies and joining support group. The results shows that the protagonist has attempted so hard to survive by doing things for her recovery; her cancer disease needs to have psychological treatment that can please herself and by doing medical treatment, medical therapies to cure a rare form of cancer. All of these are the protagonist’s efforts to live her life longer.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is conducted to analyze the factors of personal motivation in Midnight Sun movie written by Eric Kirsten. This study applies qualitative descriptive method since the process and the result of the research are accomplished descriptively. Then, the theory proposed by McClelland is used in this study. He mentions two types of factors of personal motivation. The factors include internal and external. This study is focused only on internal factors. It is stated that five factors belong to internal factors of motivation. After having analyzed those factors in the movie, only four factors are found in the analysis. They are need, hope, responsibility, self-esteem and achievement, while, job satisfaction is not found in the movie. The four internal factors happen within the protagonist himself. These factors emerge from the characters’ personal motivation. By the internal factors, the protagonist can make his dream come true. In conclusion, the result of this study shows that to realize dream and to avoid adversity, we must have a motivation to make it happen.]]>
